Our understanding of how environmental change in the Southern Ocean will affect marine diversity, habitats and distribution remain limited. The habitats and distributions of Southern Ocean cephalopods are generally poorly understood, and yet such knowledge is necessary for research and conservation management purposes, as well as for assessing the potential impacts of environmental change. We used net-catch data to develop habitat suitability models for 15 of the most common cephalopods in the Southern Ocean. Using modeled habitat suitability, we assessed favorable areas for each species and examined the relationships between species distribution and environmental parameters. The results compared favorably with the known ecology of these species and with spatial patterns from diet studies of squid predators. The individual habitat suitability models were overlaid to generate a “hotspot” index of species richness, which showed higher numbers of squid species associated with various fronts of the Antarctic circumpolar current. Finally, we reviewed the overall distribution of these species and their importance in the diet of Southern Ocean predators. There is a need for further studies to explore the potential impacts of future climate change on Southern Ocean squid.

We seem to have a robust way of talking about each other,” Vlismas added.“There are things we say here that they [UK comedians] could never get away,” Kau said.Growing It’s No JokeRenowned UK performer Eddie Izzard kicked off the It’s No Joke charity campaign earlier in February with his comedy tour called Stripped, which sold out in South Africa. There are now plans to expand the campaign and make It’s No Joke an annual event along the lines of the 46664 series of music concerts, Rensburg said.“It should be nurtured into a premier comedy festival … hopefully it will become one of the gigs that every comedian wants to join,” Kau said. read more

Kyle and I will be sorting through the 20 most important people leading up to the 2015 season every day until the Central Michigan game which, as you know, is just 18 days away.Porter: I have Brandon Sheperd in this space. Trying to figure out who will be Oklahoma State’s leading receiver in 2015 is like trying to figure out what to order at Cheesecake Factory, but Sheperd and Mason Rudolph seem to have a rapport that isn’t unanimous throughout the receiving corps. Also, he’s probably the most talented WR on the team. Boone: Motekiai Maile was an ESPN junior college top 50 prospect last season, and the Cowboys will put him to good use immediately. With the injury sustained to starter Vili Leveni, Maile will compete for the starting job at defensive tackle opposite Vincent Taylor. If Maile can continue his development, the defense should be very respectable. The defensive line is a concern due to lack of experience, but Maile will play a critical role in run support and will be needed to take pressure of the star power on the ends.If you’re looking for the comments section, it has moved to our forum, The Chamber.
