first_imgThe Nanovic Institute for European Studies provided undergraduates – seven seniors and eight sophomores and juniors – with grants for winter break research.“Over winter break, we funded 15 students through our senior travel and research grant and our break travel and research grant for sophomores and juniors. We gave a total of $30,880,” student coordinator Jennifer Fulton said. Photo courtesy of Emmie Mediate Senior Emmie Mediate stands on a bridge over the Singel canal, located near the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam. Mediate visited the Netherlands and Sweden during her winter break research trip.Junior political science major Abigail Bartels funded her project through the Center for the Study of Religion and Society (CSRS) and the Nanovic grant.“I am looking at what it means to be Christian, and more specifically Catholic, in Denmark. Denmark is the world’s least religious country, but it also has a state church,” she said. “So I am spending my year with CSRS looking at how the government views and operates regarding religions, especially the state religion and Catholicism.”Through her Nanovic grant, Bartels said she interviewed politicians, party leaders, priests, seminarians and nuns about how the government views religion.Sophomore American and pre-professional studies major Peter Fink spent his winter break researching something he said is personally relevant for him.“After finding out last year that I had Celiac disease, this year I was determined to learn as much as possible about the disease for myself and for my career aspirations of being a physician,” he said.Fink said he traveled to Ireland since it is where “the disease is most common because of its genetic component.”“I wanted to investigate the history behind the political process of the creation of its tax relief programs for people with Celiac disease, how these programs are funded and this funding’s impact on other governmental programs,” he said.Senior Africana studies and pre-medicine major Emmie Mediate said her research helped further her work on her senior thesis on HIV/AIDS programs and policies in Uganda.“Different sources of international funding for local organizations and clinics in Uganda dictate a lot of how the epidemic is fought in the country,” she said. “I went to the Netherlands and Sweden to evaluate their foreign aid programs because they have a very unique and effective model for combatting the epidemic in Uganda. I wanted to uncover why and how these programs are so successful.”Mediate offered advice about grant funding at Notre Dame.“Not just at Nanovic, but there is so much grant money available to us as undergrads here,” she said. “I would definitely encourage everybody to take advantage of these opportunities. I’ve loved being able to enhance what I’ve studied at Notre Dame by being able to travel and experience what I study and conduct my own independent research.”Tags: grants, Nanovic Institute, research, winter breaklast_img read more

How to upgrade your credit union website design in 5 seconds

first_img 34SHARESShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblr,Derik Krauss Derik is a cofounder of BloomCU, an award-winning website design agency for credit unions. His agency’s design work has received recognition from CUNA (Diamond Award), TheFinancialBrand.com, and others. He … Web: bloomCU.com Details You can learn how to improve your credit union website design in mere seconds with a Five Second Test. A Five Second Test asks visitors what information they can determine after viewing a page of your website after just five seconds. The user’s goal, in this short frame of time, is to be able to answer these three questions. What is the name of the organization? What product(s) or service(s) do they offer? (I.e, What kind of organization are they?)How can the user benefit from the credit union?   A Five Second Test will tell you if your website is effectively communicating your credit union’s brand, or not. Getting direct input from users can do wonders to help you get more leads for loans and deposits and a Five Second Test is a simple way to get started.Five seconds might seem like a very short amount of time, but in “website perception time”—which is kind of like doggy years—five seconds is an eon. In fact, Google found that first impressions of a website are formed in as little as 17 ms. Furthermore, according to the Missouri University of Science and Technology, people take just 2.6 seconds to stop scanning a whole webpage and focus on a single element. How does a Five Second Test work?In a Five Second Test, users are shown an image of a webpage for five seconds, then the image disappears. Next, the users are asked the three questions mentioned above. To you, the answers to these questions might seem obvious. For example, you may feel certain your homepage clearly communicates your name, that you’re a credit union, and how members benefit from membership. But can outsiders really determine all that info in just five seconds? You might be surprised by how many credit union website designs fail the test.Real results from two Five Second TestsLet’s look at two different website designs and the results they got from Five Second Tests. ICICI BankTake a look at this homepage design from ICICI bank:Source: ICICI BankWe ran an actual Five Second Test on ICICI Banks’s homepage with five users and here are the results:Question #1: What is the name of the organization?Responses:ICIUicic bankICICI?IciciAnalysis:Of the five users, two (40%) got the name of the bank correct, two (40%) more were close, and the fifth (20%) user didn’t know. These results are not good, but could be worse; ICICI is not a very memorable name.Question #2: What product(s) or service(s) do they offer? What kind of organization are they?Responses:WatchesBanking and app for itThey are a bank offering the usual checking/savings accounts. Not sureWatchesAnalysis:Of the five users, two (40%) correctly identified ICICI as a bank, two (40%) said they sell watches, and the fifth (20%) user didn’t know. These results are poor because most users could not correctly answer the question.Question #3: How can the user benefit from the organization?  Responses:StyleThey give a free watch if you use their appThey are offering a free watch with a new accountNo ideaUnsureAnalysis:Of the five users, two (40%) recognized that you get a free watch if you use one of ICICI Bank’s services, two (40%) didn’t know how they can benefit from ICICI Bank, and the fifth (20%) user said, “Style.” These results are are complete failure. To start with, most users (60%) couldn’t answer the question correctly. Furthermore, even though two users (40%) recognized that you get a free watch if you use ICICI Bank’s app, is that the most important thing for people to learn about the bank in a first impression? I believe not. I would hope there is a deeper reason for me to borrow or deposit money with ICICI.ICICI’s design isn’t bad in terms of color or layout, but it’s not immediately clear what they offer and why you should care. If you don’t notice the logo at the top, you might expect them to be a watch store, rather than a financial institution.OE Federal Credit UnionNow, check out OE Federal Credit Union’s homepage, a website designed by BloomCU: Source: OEFCU.org, a website designed by BloomCUQuestion #1: What is the name of the organization?Responses:OEFEDERAL CREDIT UNIONOE Credit Unioncredit unionCREDITUNIONOE Federal Credit UnionAnalysis:Of the five users, two (40%) got the name exactly correct, two (40%) just said, “Credit Union,” and the fifth (20%) got the name mostly right but emitted “Federal.” These results mostly good; perhaps “OE Federal” would be even more clear if we changed the headline to, “OE Federal Puts the Union in Credit Union.”Question #2: What product(s) or service(s) do they offer? What kind of organization are they?Responses:BANKFinancial products to Union Memberscredit unionLOANS, THEY ARE A BANKBankingAnalysis:Of the five users, three (60%) said OE Federal is a bank, one (20%) said OE Federal is a credit union, and the fifth (20%) user said they offer financial products to union members. Importantly, 100% correctly identified OE Federal as a financial institution. Perhaps the word “banks” near the bottom of the screenshot caused most people to identify OE Federal as a bank, but it could also be because the word “bank” is more commonly understood in American vernacular, whereas people are not as familiar with credit unions; in other words, many people might define a credit union as a type of bank. Question #3: How can the user benefit from the organization?  Responses:PROVIDING BANKING OPTIONSSpecific offerings to help union membersbank stuffGIVING THEM LOANSI don’t knowAnalysis:Of the five users, two (40%) said OE Federal offers banking services, one (20%) said they give loans, another (20%) said, “Specific offerings to help union members,” and the fifth user (20%) didn’t know. With the exception of the fifth user, these results are good; 80% of users understood, at least in part, the benefit of “banking” with OE Federal. On which pages should you do Five Second Tests? First, do a Five Second Test on your homepage. Your homepage gets more visits than any other page of your website and it’s the face of your brand; therefore, it’s the most important place for users to be able to answer those three questions. After testing your homepage, you could move on to some of your popular product pages, such as pages for auto loans, checking accounts, etc. Who should be your test audience?Conducting Five Second Tests with your own field of membership is a great idea. However, Useful Usability makes the excellent point that the Five Second Test should not just apply to your specific audience. A credit union website design that’s truly brilliant will be able to pass the Five Second Test with an even wider audience. If you’re looking for an inexpensive and convenient way of recruiting testers, I recommend UserBob—their pricing is the best I’ve seen.Pro Tip: Research shows you need only five users for an effective user test. How do you conduct a Five Second Test?Source: Prototyping and Usability Testing Your Designs, by Elizabeth SnowdenCreate a Free Account on UsabilityHubUsability Hub makes it really easy to conduct Five Second Tests, and it’s free to get started.Prepare ScreenshotsYou’ll need a screenshot of your homepage to upload to Usability Hub. You use a screenshot instead of your actual website so you can make certain users stay on the page that’s being reviewed. If you don’t, they might choose to click somewhere else in order to find more information and answer your questions. (How to take a screenshot)Test Your AudienceAfter each user has viewed your page for five seconds, have them answer the three questions to the best of their ability. UsabilityHub will help you get responses.   Review Your ResultsFrom your UsabilityHub, you can easily view your results. However, you can also export your data to a CSV for further analysis, if needed. If you export to a CSV, put the data in a spreadsheet and grade each answer:CorrectIncorrectPartially CorrectNow, start looking at your total results. Were most people able to answer each question correctly? Which questions had the most wrong answers? The data can tell you where your credit union website design needs improvement. For example, if most people could not recall the name of your credit union, you might want to change the size, colors, or placement of your logo. Or, you might need a new name altogether (e.g., ICICI Bank might be hard to recall no matter what the logo looks like). If people have trouble determining that you’re a credit union, consider your language and imagery. Is the term “credit union” clearly visible? Do you mention common credit union services? Are the images on your site recognizable or are they confusing? As you analyze what’s working and what’s broken, you’ll produce an improved design that clearly shows who you are, what you offer, and why people should care. And once you’ve got that in the bag, you’ll likely get higher conversions and a better return on investment, because your website is now clearly communicating the value of your services. Congratulations, you’re a marketing rockstar.last_img read more

Putin’s spokesman become fifth senior Russian official to get coronavirus

first_imgRussian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday he had tested positive for the novel coronavirus, as a new surge in infections gave Russia the third highest number of reported cases in the world after the United States.Peskov, the fifth senior official to contract the virus, said he had last met Putin in person more than a month ago, the TASS news agency reported.Putin, who has been working remotely from his residence outside Moscow and holding many meetings via video conference, held a face-to-face meeting earlier on Tuesday with Igor Sechin, the head of oil giant Rosneft. With 232,243 confirmed cases, Russia now has the third highest number in the world after the United States and Spain, according to a tally compiled by Reuters, but with 2,116 deaths one of the lowest mortality rates.Government officials attribute the lower death toll and the rising and large number of cases to a vast testing program, under which they say 5.8 million tests have been conducted.Gradual easing In Moscow, where local authorities have ordered the lockdown to remain in place until the end of May, many people seemed to think Putin’s announcement marked the end of restrictions. There were more cars on the road and people on the streets.Data compiled by internet firm Yandex showed that many Muscovites had left their homes on Tuesday morning in spite of the lockdown. New rules introduced on Tuesday mean they have to wear masks and gloves on public transport and in food shops. In other Russian regions, some hairdressers, clothing stores and outdoor cafes reopened. But few small business owners expect their profits to reach pre-pandemic levels anytime soon.”After a month of being at home, people don’t have any money,” said Viktor Razzhivin, owner of the Limpopo children’s clothing store chain in Kaliningrad, the Russian exclave wedged between Poland and Lithuania.”That’s why we have no idea when we will be making even just 30% of the profits we had before the coronavirus.”Kremlin critics say Putin’s order to ease restrictions jeopardizes the population’s health and is motivated by a desire for the state not to have to stump up more economic support.Putin on Monday unveiled new support measures for businesses and for families with children who have seen their livelihoods devastated. He said unemployment had doubled to 1.4 million in a month and he wanted to try to stop it spiraling higher.Dmitry Gudkov, an opposition politician, said Putin’s easing decision shifted responsibility and potential blame for future unpopular decisions on to regional governors, whom the Russian leader has told to implement measures to contain the virus.”The governors will be the ones introducing restrictions,” Gudkov wrote on Facebook. “They are the ones who will be responsible for the spread of the virus. Direct your anger at them.”  The Kremlin says Putin’s health is rigorously protected. In a surprise announcement on Monday, Putin said it was time after six weeks to gradually lift nationwide restrictions that had forced many people to work from home and businesses to temporarily close.Although Putin gave broad leeway to Russia’s regions to ease or tighten restrictions as they saw fit, he said it made sense for certain sectors of the bruised economy, such as construction and heavy industry, to be allowed to restart work from Tuesday. His statement, made on the same day that Russia overtook Italy in the number of coronavirus cases reported, drew criticism from some anti-Kremlin politicians. On Tuesday, the number of Russian coronavirus cases surpassed the reported tally in Britain.center_img Topics :last_img read more

first_img Associated Press In other NFL news:— The Titans are keeping the quarterback who led them within a victory of the Super Bowl, agreeing to a four-year, $118 million extension with Ryan Tannehill. The Titans went 7-3 over their final 10 regular-season games after Tannehill replaced Marcus Mariota (mar-ee-OH’-tah). Tannehill was 9-4 as a starter last season and led the NFL with a career-best 117.5 passer rating, the fourth-highest in NFL history and a franchise best. He threw for 2,742 yards with 22 touchdowns and six interceptions during the regular season after coming to Tennessee from the Dolphins.— The Patriots have extended the contract of safety Devin McCourty, who is eighth in team history with 26 interceptions. The 32-year-old McCourty has spent his entire 10-year NFL career with New England.— A person familiar with the trade says the Ravens have acquired five-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman Calais Campbell from the Jaguars for a fifth-round pick in next month’s draft. The 33-year-old Campbell was due to earn $15 million this season and count $17.5 million against Jacksonville’s salary cap. He’s expected to agree to a revised deal with the Ravens.— Falcons defensive tackle Tyeler Davison has agreed to a three-year contract extension. Davison started 12 of 16 games for Atlanta last season, recording a career-high 55 tackles with one sack and one fumble recovery. Update on the latest sports Share This StoryFacebookTwitteremailPrintLinkedinRedditVIRUS OUTBREAK-SPORTSCDC hints sports schedules could be shut down through AprilUNDATED (AP) — The already-delayed professional sports seasons in North America could be on hiatus for significantly longer than first planned. UNDATED (AP) — The NFL will have labor peace through at least the 2030 season.Players have approved a new labor agreement with the league that features a 17-game regular season, higher salaries, increased roster sizes and larger pensions for current and former players. The package was accepted by the 32 team owners last month and was initially rejected by the union’s executive board by a 6-5 vote. Player representatives voted 17-14 in favor, with one abstention. Union members had the final say and approved it by a 1,109-959 margin. The 17-game schedule won’t happen before the 2021 season. The mechanics for an uneven number of games will be worked out in the interim, with the possibility of the extra game being played on neutral sites.Owners are adding two playoff teams, bringing the total to 14. That will occur this season, with only the top team in each conference getting a wild-card bye.Additionally, the league’s business season will start as scheduled on Wednesday. However, there was no immediate word on timing and potential format changes for the draft, scheduled for Las Vegas from April 23-25. New recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Sunday night seem to suggest that sports in this country could for all intents and purposes be gone until May, if not later. That’s twice as long as the 30-day shutdowns that the NBA, NHL and Major League Soccer decided to put into place last week. The league suspensions were in response to the global coronavirus pandemic that has already made a deep impact on the U.S. financial markets and has been blamed for at least 64 deaths in this country.Major League Baseball also was going with what essentially was a 30-day shutdown after canceling the rest of spring training and pushing back the start of regular season play for two weeks; Opening Day was to have been March 26.In other virus-related news:— A New York Yankees minor league prospect has tested positive for the coronavirus. The Yankees didn’t identify the player, who is the first known player affiliated with Major League Baseball to contract COVID-19. The team said the player had spent his entire time at the minor league complex in Tampa, Florida, and hadn’t been over at the main stadium and facilities used by the major leaguers. — The New York State Olympic Regional Development Authority says all of the ski areas and venues that it manages have suspended operation. Closures include all Nordic and Alpine ski resorts including Mt. Van Hoevenberg in Lake Placid, Belleayre Mountain Ski Resort in the Catskills, Gore Mountain in North Creek and Whiteface Mountain in Wilmington, near Lake Placid. All Lake Placid Olympic sites will also be closing, including the Olympic Jumping Complex, Olympic Sports Complex, The Olympic Oval and the Olympic Center including its museum and retail shops.— Professional soccer is shutting down in Mexico following Sunday’s matches, which were already being played with no fans present as a precaution due to the new coronavirus. The measure applies to the men’s top flight and second division as well as the fledgling women’s league.
