Newlyappointed Lankan Army chief denies allegations of war crimes

first_imgColombo: The newly-appointed chief of the Sri Lankan Army has dismissed the allegations of human rights abuses during the brutal civil war with the LTTE, describing the military actions as a “humanitarian operation.” Lt Gen Shavendra Silva was named as the new Army Commander by President Maithripala Sirisena last week, evoking strong criticism from the US and the minority Tamils. Silva headed the Army’s 58th Division in the final battle against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels in 2009 and his brigade was accused of attacking civilians, hospitals and stopping humanitarian supplies to trapped Tamil civilians. Also Read – Saudi Crown Prince ‘snubbed’ Pak PM, recalled jet from US His name was mentioned in the resolution passed by the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in 2013, alleging rights abuses by the Sri Lankan Army. There were no war crimes committed. What we did was a humanitarian operation to free people from a group of terrorists , Silva told reporters in Kandy on Sunday. Silva was treated as a war hero for his contributions to ending the over three decades old separatist conflict. The Tamil civilians appreciated our action to free them from terrorists, he said, adding that he only did his job as a soldier. Also Read – Record number of 35 candidates in fray for SL Presidential polls Those (Tamils) were our own people so we had a duty to protect them. The civilians know how well we protected them, Silva added. Critics say Silva’s appointment as the Army chief may strain Sri Lanka’s cooperation in UN Peacekeeping operations and the defence cooperation between the US and Sri Lanka. Besides the US, Canadian and European Union embassies too have expressed concern over Silva’s appointment as the army chief. There is a rule of natural justice, Silva said, referring to international allegations of war crimes against the Sri Lankan troops.last_img read more

Supplies to winterize homes were delivered by helicopter Wednesday morning. Organizers and volunteers felt they had to ignore the Evacuation Order that was put in place Sunday after residents of the Old Fort expressed frustration with the information being shared by the Peace River Regional District.  Local resident Scott Campbell has stayed with his home in the Old Fort, and he still doesn’t understand why the entire community was evacuated.“We don’t feel as residents that the slide is coming our direction.  We check it all the time.  The slide is going west, not east.   The order given to us to evacuate here is not a reasonable order.”It’s unclear how many homes were winterized during the visit, as the RCMP had to enforce the evacuation order and asked volunteers to leave the community by noon that day.  The Peace River Regional District said Wednesday morning they were working on a plan to winterize homes, but they won’t start until it’s safe in the community.“At this time, it is not safe for ANYONE to enter the evacuation order area – from land or by water. Volunteers MUST NOT enter this area and MUST not transport anyone to the EVACUATION ORDER area,” said the PRRD in an update on its website. Subdued Mining Indaba

September 24, 2019

first_imgThis year’s Mining Indaba in Cape Town has closed. While it was subdued, not surprising in this downmarket, important business was done. One thing is pretty much certain, there will always be a gathering of mining people in the Cape in February each year.As usual, many more were around in Cape Town than actually registered for the Indaba. But those that participate in the ‘outdaba’ are well aware of the value of the Indaba. It brings the mining people into this great city and is the foundation on which so many meetings and deals are built.Warren Beech, Head of Mining at Hogan Lovells commented: “In 2015, the mood at the mining Indaba was generally depressed as the industry came to grips with what was then believed to be the worst position that the industry could be in. Things of course got worse and conversation turned to whether, and when, the industry would reach the lowest point, and then recover.“The mood at this year’s mining Indaba, in contrast, has been subdued – stakeholders seem to have accepted the reality of the situation and are looking at ways in which assets can be preserved in such a way that the next upswing in commodity demand  can be exploited in the quickest time possible.“The Minister (South Africa’s Minister of Mineral Resources) seems to have taken into account the voices of a range of stakeholders in the industry and has committed to addressing preservation of jobs, finalising changes to the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act, settling the dispute regarding Black Economic Empowerment and in particular, the ‘once empowered always empowered’ debate, Mining Charter 3, and heeding the call for improved  health and safety”.last_img read more

1 in 5 workers earn less than the living wage

first_imgIT HAS BEEN reported today that 300,000 workers in Ireland are earning less than the ‘living wage’.That’s according to the trade union UNITE.Its latest economic outlook found that one in five people earn less than €11.45 per hour. The ‘living wage’ is described by the union as what’s required to have a minimum essential standard of living, Unite says that’s €446 a week.Unite Regional Secretary, Jimmy Kelly, described the wages of workers in hospitality, administrative support and retail sectors as ‘poverty pay’.He added that, “nearly 20 per cent of construction workers also earn less.” This figure does not include those workers who may earn more than €11.45 per hour, but are unable to work sufficient hours to earn the weekly living wage of €446.“Nor does it take account of the expenditure needs of households of children, who would require a higher wage.”A report from Social Justice Ireland at the beginning of this week found that 16% of people in Ireland who are living below the poverty line have jobs.It described the level of poverty nationally as “a major concern”.Kelly said that, “Poverty pay undermines the living standards of the workers and families concerned – and it undermines the economy, dampening consumer demand and delaying the prospect of a sustainable wage-led recovery.London has a living wage structure which has been in place on a voluntary basis for the last seven years.Read: 16% of people in Ireland living below poverty line have jobs>Read: The introduction of a living wage would benefit ALL of Irish society>Read: Joan Burton calls for ‘living wage’ ahead of Labour Party conference>last_img read more

Buy This Comic HackSlash Resurrection 1

September 20, 2019

| hmbixfes

first_img Buy This Comic: DEATH ORB #1Buy This Comic: MAN-EATERS #1 Stay on target “Cassie Hack is the lone survivor of an attack by the slasher called The Lunch Lady… a slasher that happened to be her mother! She traveled the world with her monstrous partner and friend Vlad, hunting down and destroying slashers wherever they found them! But then Vlad died. And Cassie disappeared… Cassie Hack has been living off the grid, but when a new monstrous threat arises to torment promiscuous teens, it’s time for Cassie to pick up the baseball bat once again! Gory, sexy, twisted, and funny…HACK IS BACK!”HACK/SLASH: RESURRECTION #1(W): Tini Howard (A): Celor (C): K. Michael Russell (L): CRANK!I’m a massive nerd for Hack/Slash. I believe it was one of the top five titles I picked up when I started my adventure into comics and it hasn’t disappointed yet. Yes, there have been some ups and downs in the Hack/Slash series and spinoffs, but Cassie Hack, always the badass, forever stays true to herself. And now, she’s back! Writer Tini Howard helms this new series with artist Celor, colorist K. Michael Russell and letterer CRANK! by her side to bring Cassie along some new adventures whether she likes it or not.via Image ComicsTini Howard’s writing for the new series feels organic. It feels like the next natural development in Cassie’s slashing days. If you’re a new or old fan of the series, Hack/Slash: Resurrection doesn’t leave you behind. It flourishes in introducing new readers to the series with a brand new unique experience or, for the old fans, keeps you up to date with Cassie and prepares you for a brand new ride. The best thing about this comic, and I can’t stress it enough, is how well Howard understands Cassie and Cassie’s personality. Cassie almost feels natural for Howard to write. She pays homage to her history and moving on from her past she can’t hide from. Some golden moments come when Howard gets into Cassie’s head a little bit in the comic. She mainly has herself in these moments as she tries to struggle her natural instincts to get rid of the zombie problem knocking at her door. Howard has her continually fighting herself, stating “Not My Job,” but having to combat what comes naturally to her.via Image ComicsCelor’s art not only gives the new series unique and abstract looks, but it’s also downright surreal. If available, I’d buy every single panel in this comic as a print; it’s striking. Each panel has its own individual touch to it that’s awe-inspiring and off-kilter. The proportions are off, but that doesn’t make it less incredible. In fact, it makes me want to go back in and read again. K. Michael Russell’s colors make you feel cold. It not only goes along with the setting that Cassie’s in but also goes along with her personality that Howard perfects well. You feel the seclusion environment and the aloof arm-length stance Cassie puts herself in just in the colors alone. Russell gives you a Fargo like palette when alone and counterbalances it with heat when she finds herself having to slash.Last but not least, Crank!’s letters guides you throughout the story that builds within Cassie’s head and flows out. As Tini gives you Cassie’s internal and external fight, Crank just knows where to place the text to make your eyes follow naturally between the panels. Crank’s lettering is starting to become some of my favorites because they know how position and limit within the visual to make everything come together.via Image ComicsTim Seeley passes the bat onto Tini Howard and secures Cassie Hack in the safest hands possible. Hack/Slash: Resurrection #1 is a new beginning, but not at all a fresh start. If I know anything about Hack/Slash, I’m definitely looking forward to some classic slashing references, sexy bites, gory panels within the series and it feels like Howard and the team will deliver that and so much more.10/25/17 Releases – In addition to Hack/Slash: Resurrection #1, here’s a list of other new titles that came out this week that you should be reading.Jughead: The Hunger #1 by Frank Tieri (W), Pat & Tim Kennedy (A), Matt Herms (C), Jack Morelli (L) Archie ComicsDaddy Lost His Head and Other Stories by Al Feldstein & Jack Kamen (W) Jack Kamen (A) FantagraphicsStreet Angel: Superhero For A Day by Brian Maruca & Jim Rugg (W), Jim Rugg (A) Image ComicsTank Girl World War Tank Vol. 1 by Alan C. Erlang turns 20 Tracing the journey from Ericsson to Whatsapp

August 26, 2019
| hmbixfes

first_imgJust two days back, Erlang, a functional programming language turned twenty. Erlang has been one of the most popular open source languages with compelling features like concurrent processes, memory management, scheduling, distribution, networking, etc.WhatsApp, the most popular messaging platform’s server is almost completely implemented in Erlang. Twenty years back, on 8th December 1998, Ericsson released its development environment, Erlang/OTP (Open Telecom Platform), as an open source. It was used to make the process of building telecommunications products easier with functionalities like speed, distribution, and concurrency. It also supports a number of processors and operating systems and can be easily integrated with different development languages. Erlang fosters Ericsson’s GPRS, 3, and 4G/LTE and it also powers the internet and mobile data networks. How did Erlang become open source? When Håkan Millroth, head of the Ericsson Software Architecture Lab suggested his team to try ‘open source’, Jane Walerud, an entrepreneur agreed to it and convinced the entire Ericsson management team to release the source code for the Erlang VM. Erlang was released without any publicity, marketing buzz or media coverage. Ericsson just sent an email to Erlang’s mailing list and an announcement was posted on slashdot. During the dot-com bust era, when an extreme growth in the usage and adaptation of the Internet was observed, Erlang/OTP was used in the creation of an XMPP based instant messaging server, ejabberd, developed by Alexey Shchepin. He chose Erlang over all the other languages as it was the most suitable language for implementing a Jabber server. Ejabberd 1.0 was released in December 2005 and it formed a base for many platforms like WhatsApp. Ejabberd showed a 280% increase in throughput when it was compiled to the latest version of Erlang. In May of 2005, a version of the BEAM VM also known as Erlang VM was released that proved the Erlang concurrency and programming models are ideal for multi-core architectures. In May 2006, Erlang was also used to program RabbitMQ, an Advanced Message Queuing Protocol (AMQP). Post that, Erlang has become the language of choice for most of the messaging solutions and is now the backbone of thousands of systems. In 2007, ‘Programming Erlang’ by Joe Armstrong got published by the Pragmatic Programmers. Further in June 2008, the first paper copy of Erlang Programming got publicly available. In 2011, Elixir, a functional and concurrent programming language that runs on Erlang VM was released. In August 2015, Phoenix 1.0, a framework for web applications was released. Phoenix 1.0 uses Erlang VM capabilities to create the same effect as Rails did on Ruby, by bringing making Elixir, popular. Read more about this news on Erlang’s blog post. Shipley, is listed at 307 pounds. Now at 293 pounds, Crowley doesn’t feel like his weight will or ever has held him back. The 5: Takeaways from the Coyotes’ introduction of Alex Meruelo “It’s definitely not a bad thing to put on weight,” Crowley admitted. “But I’ve always done well at where I’m at and feel good at where I’m at.“If they need me to gain weight, I can gain weight, if they want me to stay where I am, I’ll stay where I am. I’ve never had an issue playing at my weight, so I feel pretty good about it.”In four years at North Carolina, Crowley’s size didn’t seem to be an issue.A prospect from Florida, Crowley started 41 games, including every game during his junior and senior seasons. He was twice named a Rimington Award nominee, which is given annually to the best center in the country. The center had a productive career in Chapel Hill, but the offense he ran in college did not quite prepare him for the NFL.“It’s pretty simple, we ran a fast offense (at North Carolina), so all of our calls were simple make,” Crowley said. “I didn’t have to make a mike point or make a lot of calls, we didn’t make a lot of checks, we were a go, go, go and made the play call and ran with it. It was a simple offense compared to [Arizona]. I didn’t have to read a defense or know what formation we were in or anything like that.”last_img read more

first_imgBy Evie AndreouA REVIEW team from the United Nations headquarters is to arrive on the island on Thursday to conduct a strategic review of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (Unficyp), it was announced on Wednesday.According to an announcement, the team, headed by external expert, Wolfgang Weisbrod-Weber, will be on the island between November 2 and 7 to “conduct a rigorous evidence-based assessment of the impact of Unficyp activities, in order to develop recommendations on how the Mission can be optimally configured to implement its existing mandate”.The review team – approximately 10 UN staff from the departments of Peacekeeping Operations, Field Support, Political Affairs and Safety and Security – will meet with UN officials in Cyprus, as well as relevant stakeholders on both sides of the island, representatives of the diplomatic community and civil society.“Following the visit, the team will convey its findings and recommendations to the Departments of Peacekeeping Operations, Field Support, and Political Affairs,” the announcement said. The review is part of the Security Council’s latest resolution – 2369 (2017) – issued in July which extended Unficyp’s mandate until January, 31 2018.The Security Council requested that the Secretary-General conduct a review of Unficyp “and make recommendations on how the mission should be optimally configured to implement its existing mandate, exclusively on the basis of a rigorous, evidence-based assessment of the impact of its activities, and to report on the results of the review within four months”.The review, reportedly, does not have anything to do with the failure of the Cyprus talks in Crans-Montana last July. The last review of Unficyp took place in 2005.Rumours have been swirling for months that the status of the talks would affect the peacekeeping mission on top of the fact that the Trump administration was shifting gears in its policy toward the United Nations, and its costs to member countries.Sources said at the time that there was a debate going on inside the UN on what to do with the peacekeeping mission in Cyprus and that some of the pressure was coming from the Americans. There were quarters inside the UN considering either a full-on closing down of Unficyp or at the least a scaling down, the sources said.Unficyp has already been cut down over the years to the minimum. Its current strength is 1,102 total (including uniformed and civilian personnel) to cover the 180 km-long buffer zone and is seen as ‘just enough’ to fulfil its mandate. The force’s approved budget as it stands is $55,56m. A third of this cost is met by the Republic of Cyprus. A further $6.5 million is contributed by the government of Greece. The remainder comes from assessed contributions from UN member states. You May LikeLuxury Crossover SUV I Search AdsThese SUVs Are The Cream Of The Crop.
